Complete Choral Musician

The Complete Choral Musician is an annual three-day workshop led by the esteemed choral conductor Judith Clurman (photo, right), covering all aspects of the choral art. Assisting Ms. Clurman in a series of interactive sessions are professional singers and important figures from the world of vocal music. Composers, conductors, and singers (both professional and volunteer) are welcome.

Offered by the Juilliard Evening Division, the 2008 Complete Choral Musician will take place on Tuesday through Thursday, June 24-26. Sessions take place between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. with a break for meals.

Conducting
Judith Clurman

Covering conducting techniques of all levels. Specific focus will be given on choral gestures and rehearsal versus performance techniques.

Vowels: Production and Blending
Judith Clurman
How to tune and blend a chorus through vowels, seating arrangements, and understanding of text.

The Art of Breathing; Warming Up the Registers
Candace Goetz, private vocal teacher in New York City
Warm up and breathing exercises designed for organizing your bodies to facilitate a free and unencumbered breath. The first session will focus on exercises for individuals; session two will focus on organizing and vocally preparing choirs for rehearsals and performances.

Alexander Technique; Self Massage
Hank Blumenkranz, New York City Ballet and private studio
in N.Y.C.

Alexander Technique is a hands-on method of mind-body awareness. Self massage is self-care for performers.

The Art of Recording Choral Music

Daryl Bornstein, audio producer for classical and popular events

A workshop that explores the basics of recording & sound enhancement.

Text and Improvisation
Thomas Cabaniss, faculty at The Juilliard School;
Philadelphia Orchestra

A series of theatrical improvisations where participants explore the texts they are singing and then deepen and enrich the musical connections they discover. The session draws on tableaux and acting methods to uncover the power of choral texts.

Sacred Music: An Ever Changing Genre
William Roberts, music faculty at Virginia Theological Seminary
Cantor Bruce L. Ruben, Ph.D., Director of the School of Sacred Music, Hebrew Union College

Participants will sing through musical examples and listen to recorded music that illustrates the evolution of sacred music in American worship.

A Musical Jewel: Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, K. 618
Michael White, faculty, The Juilliard School.

The history and analysis of these 46 bars of musical magic. Participants will also sing through the piece and listen to recordings.

Dalcroze Eurhythmics: What’s It All About
Joseph Reiser, composer and international Dalcroze clinician

A fun introductory session applying the methods of Dalcroze eurhythmics for conductors and singers.

Composing Pop and Broadway

Moderated by Judith Clurman, these three prominent composers will discuss their works and careers.

A Singer’s Roundtable: From Broadway to Opera to Pop

Robert White and Kelli O'Hara

Two fabulous singers will discuss various aspects of performing in different musical styles and talk about their own careers. Healthy vocal techniques for popular and Broadway repertoire will be explored through discussion and demonstration. Moderated by Judith Clurman

Tuition and Registration

The tuition for the workshop is $650, payable at the time of registration. Students may mail or fax-in the downloadable registration form provided, or, register online by clicking the register on line button. Online and fax registration will be available as of February 20, 2008. Students must be musicians who are 18 years of age or older. The workshop is limited to 45 participants.
