Admissions & Audition Requirements Admission Policies
All applicants who wish to enroll in the Music Advancement Program must perform an audition in person before members of the faculty and administration. Each applicant must submit a complete application, teacher recommendation and financial aid forms in order to schedule an audition. Call-back auditions include a parent interview, where parents meet with administrators and faculty, and a theory placement exam. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by the end of June. The application deadline for admission in the Fall is in mid-April, with auditions held in mid-May. (Please refer to the current MAP application or call the MAP office for exact dates.)
Eligibility Requirements
Children must be 8-14 years old at the time of the audition as well as reside in, and attend school within, the five boroughs of New York City (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island). Children also must have played their instrument for at least six months, and reached an “advanced” beginning to intermediate level, and have a strong desire to learn more about music. They must exhibit a high level of musical potential and motivation, and demonstrate disadvantages that make quality music education unattainable.
Eligibility Preferences
MAP targets children of underrepresented communities in the performing arts including, Black or African-American, Hispanic of any race and Native American, who have limited access to music instruction, have parents willing to support their child’s learning, and are part of the New York City Public School System.
Tuition
Tuition is charged on a sliding scale based solely on the families’ financial situation. A financial aid form, copies of all pertinent tax forms and any public assistance documentation must be submitted by the application deadline.
