Facing the Guillotine, Poulenc’s Nuns Explore the Nature of Faith

Dialogues des Carmélites contains no scintillating love stories, cases of mistaken identities, or high-flying arias. Yet Poulenc’s opera, which centers on the martyrdom of 16 Carmelite nuns during the Reign of Terror, is unrelentingly dramatic, and not merely because of the famous final scene in which the title characters march to the scaffold intoning the “Salve Regina” above the bloodcurdling sound of the falling guillotine. N.J.E. Performs a Program of Premieres

Remembering David Soyer: A Beloved Friend and Colleague
