A Tale of Two Chinas

On May 26, the orchestra, its conductor James DePreist, a piano soloist, and several support personnel fly out of Newark Liberty Airport on Juilliard's second China tour. | | 6 Honorary Doctorates to Be Awarded at Commencement Six distinguished artists and cultural leaders will be honored by The Juilliard School at its 103rd Commencement Ceremony on May 23 in Avery Fisher Hall. Legendary tenor Plácido Domingo (photo) will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Music degree. Other honorary degree recipients include jazz pianist Hank Jones; dancer, choreographer, and actor, Carmen de Lavallade; philanthropist and software engineer, Charles Simonyi; playwright, writer, and actor, Anna Deavere Smith; and pianist Mitsuko Uchida. | Jazzin' It Up in a Virtual Concert
by LISA B. ROBINSON Divergent time zones and musical styles came together on March 26 when jazz students from Juilliard and South Africa met for a virtual "Jazz Conversation." Taking place as part of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, the one-hour workshop brought together a five-piece combo of Juilliard musicians and an up-and-coming South African group, the Kyle Shepherd Quartet, in a compelling demonstration of emerging technology.
