Description:
This core course explores the relationship among the passage of time, the form of texts, and the ideas they communicate by introducing students to a distinct theme that is fundamental to human imagination, understanding, and experience. Each section explores a theme; for example, sections will engage topics such as Family, Gods, Love, Myth, Technology, Nature, Words, or War, discussing, among others, questions of canon and genre. Texts are chosen from disciplines such as comparative religion, philosophy, literature, history, and the social sciences. Students will draw upon interdisciplinary approaches to investigate how this theme was understood by writers from different historical eras, regions of the world, and cultural perspectives.
