Description:

TOPIC: Schubert's Instrumental Music

A historical and analytical study of the instrumental music of Franz Schubert, with particular attention to the symphonies, large chamber works, and piano music. This course will explore Schubert’s novel ways of structuring and expressing musical ideas as well as his position between the Classical and Romantic eras and his influence on successors. Students will examine sources and facsimile editions, and investigate recent musicological research and performance practice. Required of all second-year D.M.A. students.
