Program Information and Application Requirements The Juilliard School seeks students whose talent and commitment to excellence promise future achievement in their chosen areas of major study. To be considered for admission to The Juilliard School, prospective applicants must 1. submit an application for admission; 2. provide supporting documents and materials, and; 3. audition (or interview). The Committee on Admissions selects students primarily on the basis of their performance at competitive auditions held at The Juilliard School and in selected cities around the country. All auditions are evaluated by members of the faculty. No admissions decisions will be made until all credentials and required documents are on file.
The School does not set a minimum or maximum age limit. In general, however, the faculty and the Committee on Admissions will give preference to applicants in the formative stages of their artistic development who will benefit most from the type of training available at Juilliard.
The Juilliard School admits applicants of any race, color, or national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at The Juilliard School. It does not discriminate on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race, color, or national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other school-administered programs. An annual Campus Crime and Security Report is available upon request.
Applications for the 2011-12 academic year must be submitted by the stated deadline for your chosen division. Majors that are not pre-screened are guaranteed an audition (Acting, Dance, selected Music departments). Pre-screened majors are reviewed for audition invitations (selected Music departments). Playwrights do not audition, but selected finalists may be scheduled for a personal interview with members of the faculty and/or administrative staff. All applicants invited to audition for The Juilliard School must perform in person for members of the faculty according to the requirements in their respective departments. The Juilliard School does not accept video auditions, under any circumstances, nor may applicants audition outside the published audition dates. Those applicants scheduled for auditions will receive notification approximately one month prior to the audition. Pre-screening results will also be sent at that time.
You may not apply more than two times to the Dance and Music Divisions or three times to the Drama Division if you receive unfavorable results.
Applicants who are admitted must begin their studies in the fall semester. New students may not enroll at midyear or defer enrollment. Admissions decisions are not related to financial aid applications or decisions.
Undergraduate Programs
Undergraduate Dance and Drama applicants are eligible for either the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree or the Diploma. Both the B.F.A. and the Diploma in Dance and Drama require a full four-year course of study. The Diploma program does not include a Liberal Arts curriculum.
Undergraduate Music applicants are eligible for either the Bachelor of Music degree, which is a full four-year course of study, or the Diploma, which requires at least three years. The Diploma program does not include a Liberal Arts curriculum. Generally, high school seniors and undergraduate transfers should apply to the B.M. degree.
Full-time Barnard or Columbia students have the opportunity to pursue private music lessons at Juilliard through the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange Program (B-C-J Exchange) while pursuing an academic degree. For a detailed explanation on this exchange, please see Other Programs.

Transcripts
Documentation of secondary schooling is an essential component of the
application process. Applicants must supply official transcripts
demonstrating scholastic competence sufficient to succeed in course work
at the college level. The following guidelines are intended to clarify
The Juilliard School's expectations for those who are applying for
admission as first-time college students:
Dance and Music applicants who have
attended a secondary school, conservatory, college, or university prior
to filing the application, should send the official transcripts of
school records by February 15. Official
transcripts must be in a sealed envelope, or be sent directly from the
issuing institution. This applies to U.S. and international applicants.
Drama acting applicants who are called back at the auditions will receive a request for
a transcript at that time; otherwise, it is not required. Transcripts for called back applicants must be on file by March 11. Official
transcripts must be in a sealed envelope, or be sent directly from the
issuing institution. This applies to U.S. and international applicants.
For applicants who are graduates of foreign institutions,
those studies must be equivalent to a U.S. high school. Equivalency
information and translations may be obtained through the World
Education Service, (212) 966-6311. Applicants must submit official
school transcripts accompanied by notarized English translations by
February 15.
Graduation From High School
- Drama and Music candidates must be high school graduates or possess the equivalent of a high school diploma by the time they enroll. Home-schooled applicants please refer to the Home Schooling Documentation information.
- Dance candidates must either be high school graduates, or have earned the equivalent of a high school diploma by the time they enroll, or apply under the Early Admissions program. Early Admissions candidates apply during their junior year in high school and must be at least 16 years old upon matriculation. They must be highly talented, strongly endorsed by their principal teachers and school counselors, and show evidence of exceptional maturity.
Applicants who are offered admission must submit an official final transcript indicating their graduation date no later than July 1.
This applies to both U.S. and international admits. Juilliard reserves
the right to rescind admission to any applicant whose file documentation
is deemed insufficient and/or incomplete. It is the applicant's
obligation to see that the completed records are filed. Report cards,
grade reports, and other student records are not acceptable as final
records.
Home Schooling Documentation:
The Juilliard School recognizes home schooling as a viable educational alternative; however, there are important and explicit regulations governing acceptable documentation. Home-schooled applicants are expected to complete the Home Schooling Information Form. This information includes the submission of a full outline of the curriculum by subject, including textbooks for each course; assessment procedures and grades; and evidence of official recognition by the school district and/or state department of education. Juilliard reserves the right to rescind admission to any applicant whose file documentation is deemed insufficient and/or incomplete.
General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.):
High school equivalency diplomas are issued by states to eligible applicants who pass the qualifying examinations. Specific age eligibility and proof thereof are required. The Juilliard School adheres to the regulations governing eligibility established by the New York State Education Department and will accept G.E.D.s from qualified applicants.
Please note: While there are valid reasons for certain applicants to obtain the G.E.D., Juilliard does not recommend it as a substitute or shortcut for a traditional secondary education. In addition, the School reserves the right to rescind admission to any applicant who does not meet the appropriate state education department regulations as written.
TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL)
The TOEFL will be required of all applicants for whom English is not the native language, regardless of citizenship or study at an English language institution.
The
minimum required TOEFL score for undergraduate applicants is 200 (computer based) with a minimum
essay rating of 3.0, or 73 (internet based) with a minimum writing score
of 11, or 533 (paper based).
The ability to speak, read, and understand English fluently is an important factor in admissions decisions.
- Applicants for whom English is not a native language must submit an official copy of their TOEFL no later than February 15, 2011. Photocopies, faxes, and student copies are not acceptable.
- Applicants will not be admitted without an official score on file which meets the minimum guidelines for admission (see above grid). Applicants should take a TOEFL by January 2011 in order to have the score submitted to the Admissions Office by February 15.

Essay
All applicants are required to submit an essay as a component of the Application for Admission. The Juilliard School has specific topics for the essay, which assists the Committee on Admissions in gaining a greater insight into the applicant as an individual and as an artist.
Letters of Recommendation
All first-time college applicants must submit a recommendation letter from a high school academic teacher, preferably in English, history, or other language arts course work. Juilliard continues to renew its efforts to identify and educate leaders in the profession, students who can be not only outstanding performers, but also effective advocates, collaborators, teachers, and community partners. The impetus behind this requirement is to gain insight into the applicant's abilities in English and should acknowledge the applicant's speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension abilities. Home-schooled applicants should submit a recommendation from someone
other than a parent who can address the issues listed above.
If needed, a college professor would suffice for transfer applicants to Dance and Music.
In addition to a letter from an academic teacher, applicants to the Dance Division must also submit a letter of recommendation from a dance teacher.
In place of a letter from an academic teacher, transfer and college graduate applicants to the Drama Division should submit a recommendation from a major teacher who can discuss his/her work as an actor.
Applicants to the Music Division (with the exception of Composition majors)
are not required to submit a recommendation from a musician or music
teacher.
All applicants, please see Recommendation Form for further details.
Transfer Applicants
Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts for all full-time college level study. Applicants who have attended less than two complete, full-time semesters of college must also submit official high school transcripts.
Transfer applicants who enroll in the Dance and Drama Divisions should be aware that the training is a mandatory four-year program.
The minimum required residency for transfer applicants to the Music Division is two years (three years for Voice majors). Advanced standing for Music applicants is based entirely on faculty evaluations of the student’s capabilities and by the placement exams that are administered after acceptance.
Credits in liberal arts courses taken at accredited conservatories, colleges, or universities may be transferred after the registrar has assessed the official transcripts from those institutions. Credits in these subjects will be evaluated in light of the liberal arts requirements in the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programs at Juilliard. Credit will not be allowed for courses in which the applicant has received a grade lower than C or its equivalent. Transfer students are required to take a minimum of 12 liberal arts credits in residence at Juilliard.
Standardized Tests
Juilliard does not require the SAT I or SAT II.
However, applicants who are taking the tests are welcome to send results
to the Admissions Office. The Juilliard School’s CEEB code is 2340. The Juilliard School does not accept the ACT.
Pre-screening
Many departments in the Music Division require a recording of the required audition repertoire (and/or other materials) with the application for pre-screening purposes. For details on these departments, please consult the audition requirements. The Admissions Office will notify applicants regarding their eligibility for a personal audition.
Other

Artist Diploma in Music Performance
The Artist Diploma in Music Performance is a two-year program for the few highly gifted and experienced performers at the post-master’s level who wish to pursue focused studies in their major field leading to specific professional goals. With an emphasis on repertoire, the program is designed to develop both the artistry and professionalism in performers who possess the ability and determination to realize their talent in the contemporary world.
Admissions decisions for Artist Diploma in Music Performance applicants are made by the Artist Diploma Performance Committee. Applicants who wish to be considered for both the Artist Diploma in Music Performance and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree programs may select this option on the online application. Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange (B-C-J Exchange)
A limited number of current or prospective Barnard and Columbia students may have the opportunity to pursue private music lessons at Juilliard. Successful applicants to the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange are full-time registered students at Barnard or Columbia, have weekly lessons with a member of the Juilliard faculty, and take annual juries, which determine eligibility to continue in the program. It is important to note that the Exchange does not include participation in Juilliard large ensembles or classes.
Participants in the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange must pay, in addition to Barnard or Columbia tuition, $5,060/year for the cost of lessons at Juilliard. Need-based financial aid is awarded to Barnard and Columbia students; please refer to each college’s financial aid policies for specific information. The additional tuition expenses for Exchange participants will be factored into the awarding of each applicant's need-based financial aid eligibility.
Applicants to this program must submit a Juilliard Application for Admission, including pre-screening materials if required, by the published deadline. Admission to the Exchange is highly selective, with only 8–10 applicants from all classical and jazz music majors admitted each year. The application fee for Exchange applicants is $35.
Applicants to both the Exchange AND Bachelor of Music at Juilliard: Barnard and Columbia applicants who apply to the Exchange may also choose to apply to The Juilliard School for the Bachelor of Music. On the application, select “Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange AND Bachelor of Music.” It is possible, because of the selectivity described above, that applicants to both Juilliard and the Exchange may be admitted to only Juilliard’s Bachelor of Music program and not be admitted to the Exchange, regardless of admission status at Barnard or Columbia.
First-time college students who are applying Early Decision to Barnard or Columbia must withdraw their Bachelor of Music application if admitted Early Decision, but may continue with their application to the Exchange. The application fee for applicants to both The Juilliard School and the Exchange is $100.
Students who have been admitted to and participate in the Exchange while attending Barnard or Columbia do not receive a double (or dual) undergraduate degree. However, they do have the opportunity of auditioning for the Juilliard Master of Music degree program during their junior year at Barnard or Columbia. Exchange students must apply for the Master of Music by the December 1 deadline, and pay the $100 application fee. The pre-screening (if applicable) is waived. The applicant should complete most liberal arts requirements at Barnard or Columbia within three years, while taking major lessons at Juilliard. In the spring of the junior year, the applicant will audition at Juilliard for entrance to the Master of Music program. If admitted, the student will normally spend two subsequent years (three for Voice majors) primarily at Juilliard, while finishing any remaining undergraduate requirements at Barnard or Columbia. Successful completion of all requirements for both institutions will lead to a Bachelor’s from Barnard or Columbia and a Master of Music from Juilliard. If Barnard/Columbia students wish to pursue this option, they should seek counseling at both Juilliard and their home institution on how to make this option work for them.
The B-C-J Exchange program also allows Juilliard students in good academic standing the opportunity to enroll in one course per semester at Barnard or Columbia (excluding students in Drama). Undergraduate students may be eligible to enroll in liberal arts electives at Barnard or Columbia to satisfy the third- and fourth-year requirement. Graduate students may be eligible to enroll in a course for enrichment purposes, however, the courses do not satisfy graduate requirements. Applications are available in the Office of the Registrar and must be filed each semester. New students must complete at least one semester at Juilliard to be eligible to apply.
